Abstract

An explicit time-marching finite volume method is described for solving the shallow water equations on boundary-fitted grids. The method is robust, flexible, and provides high resolution of flow discontinuities. Such discontinuous flow features correspond physically to phenomena like hydraulic jumps and bore waves caused, for example, by changes in channel geometry or particular tidal and bed conditions. The method is based on an upwind scheme of the Godunov type which are currently popular in aeronautical CFD. It uses cell-centred collocated data which is extrapolated to cell interfaces using a MUSCL reconstruction approach and slope limiters, thereby effectively eliminating
