Abstract

This paper introduces the concept of a decomposition hierarchy which is a set of ideas in the context of computational modelling of physical systems. The concept is to consider divide-and-conquer algorithms at different levels of a computational modelling process including (a) the differential equation level, (b) the algorithmic level and (c) the do-loop level. Such concept provides an early identification of possible coarse-grained and fine-grained parallelisation. It is possible to introduce built-in parallel properties so that an heterogeneous distributed computing environment can be used effectively. A number of ex- amples including boundary layer problems, jet noise problems, metal cutting problems and solutions of panel element equations are used to ill
