Abstract

Shot peening - residual stress - cost reductions P. O'Hara Metal Improvement Co. Inc., Hambridge Lane, ABSTRACT Shot Peening to induce compressive stress is viewed by many as an additional treatment, therefore an additional cost. Whilst true that it is a cost that must be accounted for, that extra sum may produce considerable savings in other areas. A reduction in problems from fatigue, fretting, stress corrosion and other surface failure mechanisms can result in less customer complaint, greater customer confidence and overall better customer relations. In addition, present design can be extended in performance without expensive redesign; stocks can be reduced without double/treble stockholding and times between overhauls can be extended. Examples covering Aerospace, Automotive and Chemical Industries will be dealt with.
