Abstract

The "erasing" of brownfields in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada L. P. Piccioni Economic Development Department, City of Hamilton, Canada Abstract This paper examines the City of Hamilton's Environmental Remediation and Site Enhancement (ERASE) Community Improvement Plan (CIP). As its name suggests, the Plan is designed to "erase" brownfields by providing property owners with financial incentives to clean up and redevelop brownfield sites and replace them with productive economic land uses. A brief description of the brownfield problem facing communities is followed by a description of the origin and evolution of the ERASE Plan. The financial incentives contained in the Plan are then described. A case study of a brownfield redevelopment project that utilized the ERASE programs is examined, and program results to date are presented.
