Purvis" ^Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, University of Portsmouth, UK ** Combustion Division, Hamworthy Engineering ABSTRACT Public concern regarding emissions of nitrogen oxides from power generation plant has been recognised in the form of the Environmental Protection Act (UK 1990) and the EU large Combustion Plant Directive. These legislative obligations provide commercial opportunities for manufacturers of combustion equipment to meet current and projected emission standards based on on-going research and development activity. The Combustion Division of Hamworthy Engineering Ltd have been involved in the development of power utility burners over the past fifty years and work benefits from the use of full scale burner test rigs.
