Abstract

Thermal conduction in phasor notation G. De Mey Department of Electronics and Information Systems, University of Ghent, Sint Pietersnieuwstraat 41, B-9000 Ghent, Belgium ABSTRACT In a short introduction the need for studying the heat conduction equation in phasor notation will be highlighted. The governing equations and the Green's function are derived and the BEM technique is illustrated with the help of a particular example. 1 INTRODUCTION In electric network theory, the use of complex numbers or the phasor no- tation, often described as "AC" (alternating current), is very well known. Sometimes, electric engineers forget the actual currents and voltages always remain real quantities. The phasor notation is just an efBcient mathema- tical tool. In thermal engineering, the phasor notation is less known. The reason is quite simple: a heat source rarely varies sinusoidally with respect to time unlike voltage and current sources.
