Abstract

Application of the regular direct boundary element method for plate bending problems J.L. Wearing, O. Bettahar Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK ABSTRACT This paper discusses the application of the Regular Direct Boundary Element Method for the analysis of plates with awkward boundary conditions. The particular problem of plates having discontinuities on the boundary is considered and two case studies are presented in the paper. These are a parallelogram shaped plate with two opposite edges simply supported and the other two edges free and a rectangular plate with half of its boundary simply supported and the other half free. The plates have been analysed using quadratic and cubic spline elements and results of the displacement and bending moment distribution are presented. These results indicate that the Regular Method with the source boundary removed from the actual boundary of the problem yields a considerable imp
