Abstract

A boundary element method for acoustics in a subsonic uniform flow L. Lee, T.W. Wu Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Kentucky, Lexington KY 40506, USA ABSTRACT In this paper, the direct boundary integral formulation is applied to acoustic radiation in a subsonic uniform flow. This boundary integral formulation uses the Green's function derived from the adjoint operator of the governing differential equation. Unlike the conventional formulation that uses the Helmholtz integral equation in a transformed domain, the direct boundary integral formulation requires no coordinate transformation. Several numerical examples are given to demonstrate this formulation. INTRODUCTION Simulation of sound radiation and scattering in a convective flow has many important applications in aeroacoustics [1], such as prediction of noise radiated from engines of commercial aircraft in steady flight and performance evaluation of silencers containing axial flows.
