Abstract

A biodegradable composite was molded by an injection molding method. A raw silk fiber and a biodegradable resin such as poly (buty1ene succinate) were selected as a reinforcement and a matrix material, respectively. The applicability of raw silk fiber to a reinforcement of fiber reinforced biodegradable composite was investigated. The volume fractions of raw silk fiber were varied in the experiments and were 10, 20 and 30%. The tensile, bending and the impact tests were performed and their properties were discussed. The elastic modulus and the strength of the molded composite increased with increasing the silk fiber content. Moreover, significant improvements were shown in an impact property. It is concluded here that the raw silk fiber acts as a good reinforcement for the biodegradable composite.
