Abstract

Traffic signal or roundabout? Intersection design and air pollution P.O. Hoglund*, J. Niittymaki* "Traffic and Transport Planning, Royal Institute of Technology, S-10044 Stockholm, Sweden Laboratory of Transportation Engineering, Helsinki University of Technology, Rakentajanaukio 4, SF-02150 Espoo, Finland Abstract This paper will deal with the results from a case study of comparing a certain in- tersection and its present traffic signal system with two alternative reconstruc- tions, one with a more advanced traffic signal system and the other as a rounda- bout without traffic signals. The site is located in the semi-central urban area in Malmo, Sweden. The research methodology used is traffic simulation and calcula- tions of emissions related to singular vehicles' driving patterns by a specially de- veloped computer programme. The aggregated results of total emissions, for vari- ous substances depending on certain "real" traffic situations for different times of
