Abstract

A national inquiry into urban air pollution in Australia was conducted for the Australian Commonwealth Government in 1997, by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. This inquiry considered a wide range of sources of air pollution in urban areas, including the impacts of urban transport. The inquiry examined possible changes and developments in urban transport over the period 1997-2015 that could affect air quality. It concluded that congestion mitigation and road pricing are measures that can now be readily implemented in Australia to give small reductions in emissions. However the real gains are more likely to come from improvements in vehicle technology and the turnover of the vehicle fleet towards more fuel efficient and low emitting vehicles. 1 Introduction
