Abstract

Hydrocodes are finite element/difference codes with special numerical algorithms to solve shock-wave-propagation and penetration problems. In these codes, the material description consists of (1) a strength model, and (2) an equation of state. This paper discusses only the formulation and the numerical implementation of strength models in hydrocodes. There are two types of formulations encountered. The first formulation begins with an empirical expression of the yield strength (Y) of the material as a function of strain, strain rate, and temperature.
