Abstract

Analytical second order wavemaker theory verified in a numerical wave flume J. Skourup International Research Centre for Computational Hydrodynamics (ICCH), Danish Hydraulic Institute, Agern Alle 5, DK-2970 H0rsholrn, Denmark ABSTRACT The second order components of water waves are important for a variety of physical phenomena, e.g. slow drift motions of ships, ringing of offshore structures and surf beats. An accurate reproduction of the second order components of water waves is therefore often required in physical and in numerical models. The analytical formulation for second order wave generation has recently been re-derived by Schaffer (1995) and the theory has been used for calculating a second order control signal for a wave paddle. This control signal is used as input to a fully non-linear 2D Boundary Element Model (BEM) which is designed as a wave flume.
