Abstract

PC - Puff: A simple trajectory model for local scale applications S. Adriaensen, S. Cosemans, L. Janssen, C. Mensink, M. Ruts & N. Lewyckyj Centre For Remote Sensing and Atmospheric Processes, VITO, Boeretang 200, B-2400 Mol, Belgium Abstract The PC-Puff model was developed to simulate the advection of pollutants emitted from different sources as a function of time. Both continuous emissions and releases limited in the time can be considered. Trajectory simulations can be performed and visualised at different heights and simulations can be carried out either in "real-time" or using data acquired in the past. Simulation of the expected evolution of the trajectories in the hours following the emission can also be provided supposing that the meteorological situation during the simulation does not change. Reverse simulations (determination of the possible origin of air pollution) are also possible. Tests for possible lack of meteorological data are regularly performed. Visualisation of the trajectories can be carried out on a dynamic way (step by step) and areas covered by the different puffs (or were the plume is expected to go) can automatically be determined. The model was successfully tested for several typical weather conditions. This kind of model is a.o. well suited for evaluating qualitatively odour problems. Air concentrations and depositions on the soil surface are not calculated as no diffusion is simulated in this first version of the model. Furthermore, nor the topography neither possible chemical transformations of the pollutant during the transport in the air are considered. 1 Introduction Air quality monitoring and modelling are topics that gained importance, especially during the last decades as more people become aware that they are
