Abstract

The prediction of the total resistance of a ship is generally based on con- sidering it to be a simple sum of the viscous resistance and the wave resis- tance. This is known as the Froude hypothesis and is used in the process of extrapolating the drag data from towing-tank tests on ship models to the prototype vessel. During these experiments, one usually approximates the viscous resistance by the standard frictional resistance on the equiva- lent flat plate multiplied by the so-called form factor, and whose value is known for various ship types. This approach for predicting full-size ship resistance is practical but obviously has the deficiency that a model has to be built for each prototype of interest and the resulting tank tests are time consuming.
