Abstract

In order to develop Knowledge Based Systems (KBSs) to express the knowledge on failures of engineering systems, a knowledge engineer has to work with very diverse sources of information. In this paper the localized corrosion behavior of high strength aluminum alloys is used as an example to illustrate how fundamental information describing the grain boundary nature of an alloy can be organized for its integration into generic KBSs designed to support materials performance maintenance.
