Maria della Misericordia, Udine, Italy 1 Introduction and Motivations This paper concerns a research project aimed at automating Quality Control (QC) procedures in Diagnostic Radiology by means of a knowledge-based approach. The ultimate goal of a radiological process is generating images containing information critical to the solution of a given clinical problem. Many factors, both human and equipment related, influence the final diag- nostic outcome and the patient exposure to X-rays. An essential prerequisite is that equipment functions properly: to this purpose QC tests are carried out at prescribed intervals in order to detect equipment malfunctions, so as to permit corrective actions before significant deterioration of the image quality occurs.
