Abstract

Finite element modelling of ductile failure using an automatic element elimination technique and multi-phase elements J. Wulf, Th. Steinkopff, H.F. Fischmeister Max-Planck-Institut fur Metallforschung, Institut fur Werkstoffwissenschaft, D-70174 Stuttgart, Germany ABSTRACT In this work macroscopic and microscopic studies are presented on the fail- ure behavior of the two-phase material Al-SiC(20%) using advanced Finite Element Methods (FEM). Multiphase elements and the elimination technique are new approaches to deformation and failure modelling with FEM. The Element Elimination Technique (EET) [1] is based on the removal of elements when characteris- tic stresses or strains reach pre-determined critical values. The Method of MultiPhase Elements (MPE) [2] proves to be an efficient alternative to the customary rendering of phase boundaries by element edges. Stable crack propagation was initiated in a displacement controlled three- point bending geometry. In a macroscopic study the measur
