Pyzalla-Schieck Ruhr- Universitdt Bochum, Lehrstuhl Werkstofftechnik, Institut fur Werkstoffe, 44^80 Bochum, Germany * NU-TECH GmbH, 24356 Neumiinster, Germany ABSTRACT During cooling a metal matrix composite (MMC) of pure nickel metal matrix (MM) and diamond hard phases (HP) from 1000°C to room temperature inhomogeneously distributed micro residual stresses emerge due to the different mechanical and physical properties of the constituents. The distribution of these micro residual stresses is evaluated by finite element calculations (FEM) whereas X-ray diffraction measurements provide an integral measured value. Proceeding from FEM calculations of the stress and strain fields around a single hard phase, simulations of real microstructures bring about the influence of the distribution of hard phases.
