Abstract

Coupling between thermal and electrodynamic models H. Hedia, A. Nicolet, F. Henrotte, A. Genon & W. Legros University of Liege, Department of Electrical Engineering, Institut Montefiore - Sart Tilman Ize^e, ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to present a finite element method for solving magneto- thermal coupled problem with a sinusoidal excitation. In most cases, the thermal time constant is higher than the magnetic time constant. This allows to consider the magnetic problem as quasi stationary and to uncouple the two time bases. For the magnetic problem, a complex formulation is used while for the thermal problem a step by step study is carried out using a semi explicit scheme where the Joule effect and the electromagnetic properties are evaluated at the previous step. The application of the method to an induction furnace is presented to show its workability. INTRODUCTION Thermal effects are very important in electrical devices, as a principal effect (induction fur
