Abstract

Power^ Wessex Institute of Technology, UK Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nottingham, UK Abstract An indirect integral equation formulation to study the low Reynolds number deformation of a viscous drop containing a solid particle and subject to surface tension is developed. The formulation is applied to the problem of viscous sintering with particular attention to the effect of the particle inclusion on the drop surface evolution and coalescence time. 1 Introduction Sintering is a process in which a granular compact of metals, ionic crystals or glasses, consisting of many particles, is heated to such a temperature that the mobility of the material is sufficient to make contiguous particles coa- lesce.
