Abstract

The entrapment of ambient fluid into a jet represents the fundamental method by which dilution and mixing are achieved. For an application such as the discharge of an effluent into a river or stream, the influence of the ambient coflow on the extent of entrainment and mixing which occurs becomes important. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ambient turbulence on the entrainment into a plane non-buoyant turbulent jet issuing into a shallow coflowing stream. The experimental study was carried out through a comparison of a turbulent plane jet issuing into a coflow with low turbulence to that of a turbulent plane jet issuing into increasingly turbulent coflows.
