Abstract

The generating mechanisms which occur during machining operations determine the surface finish, topography, texture, sub-surface metallurgy and residual stress of a manufactured surface. These aspects of a surface influence component functional performance. There are standards and codes of practice for denning these aspects yet not all the aspects are covered. This paper draws attention to the deficiencies. 1.0 Introduction The generating events inherent in manufacturing processes will influence the surface finish, texture, sub-surface metallurgy and residual stress. Each of these aspects will influence product performance in a variety of ways.
