Abstract

Numerical study of interface between sand and steel J. Tejchman, W. Wu Institute of Soil Mechanics and Rock Mechanics, Karlsruhe University, Germany ABSTRACT Numerical simulation of simple shear tests between sand and steel plates using an elasto-plastic Cosserat model implemented in a finite element code is presented. The Cosserat model differs from the conventional theory of plasticity due to the presence of Cosserat rotations and couple stresses with the mean grain diameter as a characteristic length. The additional bound- ary condition along the steel plate, pertinent to the Cosserat continuum, allows for different roughness of the steel plate with consideration of grain rotations. Comparison between the numerical calculations and the experi- mental results shows acceptable agreement. INTRODUCTION During shearing granular materials along steel structures, a thin shear zone with a defined thickness adjacent to the steel surface is formed. Within the shear zone pronounced grain r
