Abstract

An algorithm is developed to mitigate the impact of a deliber- ate spill of hazardous materials on the environment. This algorithm provides an operator with fast information about how to release the substance and computes the discharge hydrograph for a given flow field. The adjoint solution to the basic two dimensional mass trans- port equation is used to compute the necessary gradient information. Examples for steady state and unsteady flow situations are given using channels with arbitrary bathymetries. 1 Introduction In a hypothetical emergency case a waste treatment plant operator is in need of specific information in order to adjust the discharge, so that the constraint of an allowable concen
