Abstract

Structural design in architecture has always been influenced, at different levels, by structural design in nature. In order to increase the understanding of the relationship between structural design in nature and in architecture it is important to have a theory, allowing us to connect these two fields, and to create a basis for a comprehensive perspective. This article proposes a theoretical framework of structural design in nature and in architectural design. Structural design variables are developed and each design variable is examined in nature and in structural design in architecture. This enables us to find from which variables we can learn more from nature and to note possible future directions of structural design in architecture. 1 Introduction – st
