Abstract

Gaseous ammonia from traffic emissions in the urban area of Rome C. Perrino, M. Catrambone & A. Di Menno Di Bucchianico C.N.R. Institute of Atmospheric Pollution, Italy. Abstract Although the main source of atmospheric ammonia is agriculture (animal wastes and fertilizers), in the last few years an increase of NH3 emissions due to the introduction of vehicles equipped with catalytic converters was reported in the literature. Some field studies carried out in tunnels showed a ten-fold increase of ammonia concentration from the entrance to the exit of the tunnel, suggestmg that exhausts may have a considerable influence on urban ammonia levels. To test this hypothesis, we have conducted many series of measurements of ammonia concentration in the urban area of Rome (Italy) and in a rural area 30 km away, during the period 2001 - 2003.
