Abstract

Environmental aspect of meat and bone meal co-incineration in thermal power plant F. Kokalj', N. Samec', U. Rotnik2, J. A special attention will be dedicated to the pollutants formation possibilities during the combustion process and flue gas treatment. An accurate experimental analysis of all the residues has been performed and discussed. Some comparisons with other possible MBM treatment technologies, from the environmental point of view, have also been made. 1 Introduction Environmental concern is growing among people and some health care as well as connected social problems should be done with accordance to highest environmental standards and regulations. The same problem has arisen with meat and bone meal (MBM). Since it's use for feeding animals is currently prohibited, large amounts of MBM across Europe have been causing storage problems. As a candidate country for the EU membership Slovenia is currently harmonising its legislation with acquis communaitare and strives to achieve full conformity with EU directives and regulations. Considering the result of Bovine Spongifonn Encephalopathy crisis in Europe, by EC requirement, risky MBM must be burnt. [l]. Slovenia accepted the directive and tried to solve the problem with its own recourses or with the EU assistance. Currently there are only a few industrial incinerators across the country with small and sold out capacity. CO- incineration of MBM in large scale coal (lignite) thermal power plant was the final decision made by our government. Theoretical and laboratory investigations of MBM composition and combustion properties were studied at
