Abstract

Modelling two groundwater scenarios in an aquifer near Florence R.C. Barros* & L.R. Romanelli^ ^Department of Civil Engineering-FEUP, University of Porto, Portugal * University of Florence, Italy Abstract A few standard methods are used for the analysis of a typical groundwater flow problem in an isotropic and anisotropic aquifer zone, with both hypotesis of steady and unsteady flow. They vary from the finite-difference method to the finite-element method, applied with different solution strategies. Moreover, a groundwater management linear programming problem of an aquifer is formulated in terms of maximizing the total amount of water pumped, under a given set of constraints limiting the maximum drawdown. The developed software, of the distinct methods used and of the different approaches to groundwater scenarios, is then applied to a real aquifer in Italy near Florence of which geological profiles, pumping-test data and topographical maps, among other data, are a
