Abstract

The paper presents an efficiency evaluation method for modernization (improvement) of waterways on the basis of a navigational risk analysis. The presented method consists of two stages. At the first stage the navigation risk is assessed for investigated alternatives of fairway modernization. At the second stage the economic risk is estimated. The risk calculated in the way presented considers total severity of accident consequences. This method has been applied for modernization of Swinoujscie-Szczecin waterway and a calculation example is presented in the paper. 1 Introduction A basic criterion in selecting the method of constructing or modernizing a waterway is navigational safety in the sea area in question. A quantitative assessment of the safety is a navigational risk. The risk is generally defined as a product of collision
