Abstract

A direct method of detection of two air pollutants, benzene and toluene, is proposed. These pollutants can be trapped in porous matrices, whose polarity and pore size can be monitored, and be discriminated by optical detection method. A fast response time (60 sec.) and a sensitivity of 10 ppm are obtained for benzene with thin films. 1 Introduction Monocyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MAHs : benzene, toluene and xylenes) are important organic air contaminants emitted into the atmosphere by au- tomobile exhaust or storage, transfer and handling of fuel.
