Abstract

Focusing on the case of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, this paper addresses the renewal of old inner-city areas of the developing countries. It is rather common both in developed and developing countries, that most inner-city neighbourhoods in the initial stage of their formation establish a balance between residential and commercial activities. The prevailing trend toward increasing commercialisation appears to be in rriost cases the predominant threat to the inner-city poor resulting in uprooting people and dwellings, destroying the micro-business and the informal economy established in the area, gentrification and marginalization of the poor.
