Abstract

A modern Algerian radiological early warning system (AREWS) is described. Algeria has two research nuclear reactors. AREWS should monitor possible radiological pollution around the research reactors and radiological pollution due to medium or long range transport of pollutants from Europe, the direction of prevailing winds. The design of the system, the instrumentation used and the communications are explained in detail. Then the main features of the software are described. The paper concludes with the present state of the system which is now in its final state of installation. Introduction The Chernobyl accident shows that severe nuclear accidents are possible. From that time on, continuous automatic radiological measuring systems have been constructed in many countries.
