Abstract

BERLIOZ: A Field Experiment within the German Tropospheric Research Programme (TFS) Invited contribution Karl H. Becker, Birgit Donner and Siegmar Gab Bergische IJniversitat-GH Wuppertal, Fachbereich 9 - Chemistry, 42097 Wuppertal, Germany Motivation The observation of increasing ozone concentrations and high ozone peaks near the ground during summertime has attracted much interest, especially because this ozone concentration increase is accompanied by harmful effects on plant growth and human health. Ozone is formed within city plumes via chemical reactions during irradiation of the polluted air masses by sunlight. Because sunlight plays a significant role in these reactions the formation of ozone in the lower troposphere is known as "photosmog". Although ozone formation in polluted air has been a matter of interest and research for a long time, it is still not sufficiently underst
