Abstract

DATE-Graz: Dispersion of Atmospheric Trace Elements using the City of Graz as an Example A contribution to subproject SATURN R A Almbauer, D. Ottl, Ch. Sudy and P J Sturm Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Thermodynamics, Technical University Graz, Inffeldgasse 25, A-8010 Graz, Austria Introduction The city of Graz, Austria (250,000 inhabitants), is located in the south-east of the Alps in a basin surrounded by mountains on three sides. The location in the lee of the Alps leads to a low mean wind speed connected with well established local wind systems. During winter strong temperature inversions lead to rather high polluted episodes (Almbauer et al, 1995). Emissions come mainly from traffic and domestic heating. Industry is of minor importance for the air quality in winter as the pollutants are emitted via tall stacks. In summer emissions from the city influence the ozone leve
