Policy Development Requires Verified Models: An Impossible Task? Invited contribution from the coordinator of subproject GLOREAM Peter JH Builtjes 7NO-MEP, P.O.Box j^Z 7JOOAF/^M^^^ DzeAWzgr/oW,? Introduction The aim of the sub-project GLOREAM global and regional atmospheric modelling is to investigate by means of advanced and integrated modelling, the processes and phenomena which determine the chemical composition of the troposphere over Europe and on a global scale. This scientific aim will be reached by the development and improvement of three-dimensional regional and global scale atmospheric transport chemistry models, and by application of simplified models for specific environmental policy issues and the assistance of other EUROTRAC-2 subprojects. Model evaluation and validation are one of the key activities in GLOREAM. Before models can be used with confidence to study specific scientific questions
