Larsen* *Ris0 National Laboratory, Frederiksborgvej 399, DK-4000 Roskilde, Denmark ^National Environmental Research Institute, Fredriksborgvej 399, DK-4000 Roskilde, Denmark Introduction The air-sea exchange of gaseous NHs plays an integral role in coastal biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics because gaseous NH] which is highly soluble, is taken up as NH/ during algae blooms. The hypothesis is that NHg can be released and emitted into the atmosphere during decay of the biomass. Due to the difficulties in measuring NHs in the marine atmosphere, only few experiments have been carried out to investigate this cycle (e.g. Quinn et #/., 1988; Harrison, 1994; Huebert, 1996).
