Abstract

Three different experimental steps were carried out. The first set of experiments was to select bacterial strains able to grow and degrade the pollutant (acetone or dichloromethane) as the sole organic carbon source. The second set of experiments used a batch reactor to estimate the efficiency of the bacterial strains selected. The final set of experiments were conducted using a suspended-growth bioscrubber which was designed, constructed and tested to determine if biomass could be supported in the system with gaseous pollutants as the only organic carbon source. The removal efficiency varied from 63 to 79 % at acetone laods between 0.6 and 3 g/h and from 67 to 72 % at dichloromethane load between 33 and 220 mg/h.
