Abstract

The aim of the present work is the numerical solution of Stokes flow in three- dimensional pixelized porous media, and the determination of their absolute permeability. A finite difference scheme with a staggered MAC mesh is considered for the discretization of the equations, while artificial compressibility is employed to cope with the numerical instabilities caused by the continuity equation. A successive overrelaxation routine is used to solve for the velocities in each direction. Random structures of isotropic and anisotropic media are considered first. It is found that in all cases anisotropy results in increased values of the permeability; this effect is more pronounced in the longitudin
