Abstract

We consider a dissolved contaminant that is injected into the groundwater as a momentary point source. Because of aquifer heterogeneity the spatial variation of the flow properties is erratic. A stochastic formulation of the mass transport is applied, which is based on direct generation of a random velocity field, given statistical properties of the hydraulic conductivity field. Numerical experiments are performed to simulate the development of a plume over long time periods. The results are evaluated to describe different aspects of risk due to the uncer- tainties in the knowledge of the hydraulic conductivity.' 1 Introduction Groundwater contamination extends slowly, but continuously over large areas.
