Abstract

Pehlivanidis Department of Civil Engineering, Division of Hydraulics and EnmrcmmeftW Emgmeermg, f/mverszfi/ o/ T^e^^a/oTizA;^ ^0 06 Thessaloniki, Greece ABSTRACT The length of seawater intrusion in submarine circular pipes, as in the case of submarine pipes disposing of wastewater into the sea, is studied on the basis of Schijf and Schoenfeld's [5] assumptions. For steady state conditions, the saltwater intrusion takes the form of an arrested saline wedge. The derived equation of the interface has been numerically solved and the dimensionless length of wedge is given in graphic form appropriate for practical applications. In these graphs the aforemensioned length has been expressed as function of: (a) the wastewater flowrate; and (b) the diameter and the slope of the pipe.
