Abstract

3-D modelling of pollutant transport in currents P.F. Matsoukis School of Engineering, Hydraulics Division, Democritus o/ TTtr&ce, XanfM ^7^00, Greece ABSTRACT The application of a Finite Difference explicit scheme is demostrated solving numerically the three-dimensional (3-D) equation which describes the process of combined advection-diffusion of the concentration C of a pollutant discharging in maritime waters through an underwater diffuser. In the far field, the pollutant is assumed to be carried away by the action of either tidal, wind- or wave-induced currents. Results of an engineering case with practical consequences are presented and thoroughly discussed. INTRODUCTION The transport of a pollutant in a water body is the result of the combined processes of advection, effectuated by the moving fluid, and of molecular and turbulent diffusive processes, the latter being by many orders of magnitu
