Abstract

The application of numerical computer models, who can handle multiphase flow, represents a reasonable alternative to the use of single phase flow models. An introduction is given to the theory of multiphase flow and afterwards some practical applications are shortly described. Introduction Numerical computer models are widely used in groundwater and environmental engineering. In most cases, this numerical models are designed to calculate flow of only one fluid phase. Several limitations are the result of this simplification. Risk analysis of leaks in a landfill barrier or the planning of a site-remediation, where the contaminant is present in an own fluid phase, cannot be determined with this models. Multiphase flow models are developed in the petroleum industry to calculate flow of oil, gas and water in hydrocarbon reservoirs. W
