Abstract

The stability properties of time domain indirect boundary element methods for transient elastodynamic problems are discussed. Evidence of intermittent instabilities is shown, their causes are highlighted, and a new time stepping algorithm with improved stability and accuracy characteristics, applicable to direct and indirect methods, is proposed. 1 Introduction Numerous time domain direct and indirect boundary element methods have been published in the boundary element literature over the past 30 years, but there have been relatively few papers published which mention or examine the stability properties of these methods. This situation is contrary to the finite difference and finite ele
