Abstract

Feasibility analysis of photocatalytic wastewater treatment I. Mazzarino Politecnico di Torino, Italia Abstract Since the early 80's the photocatalytic oxidation is well known as a way to degrade organic compounds in aqueous solutions. A wide number of scientific publications has proved the efficiency of photocatalysis with most classes of organic pollutants. The complete degradation of the organic compounds occurs at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. In spite of these positive features the photocatalysis is still considered as an experimental technology and up to now it has not been applied for waste waters treatment in large scale plants. In this work the feasibility of the photocatalytic purification process was investigated by evaluating the cost of water treatment in several practical cases. The examined system is a tubular reactor packed with a fixed bed of supported catalyst and equipped with commercial UV-A lamps. The performance of the system was simulated by
