ABSTRACT
In this paper the concept of Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian kinematic
description is reviewed and applied to free surface flows.
The use of
appropriate equilibrium equations is discussed.
The corresponding vari-
ation al formulations are then established.
Since the variational problems
are nonlinear with respect to the moving coordinates, second order ap-
proximate variational problems are derived after a linearization of the
referential motion.
Numerical results of of a large sloshing problem are
presented at the conference.

INTRODUCTION
Free and moving boundary problems are very common not only in nature
but also in industrial processes.
The difficulties inherent to these prob-
lems are very challenging.
