Abstract

Combined use of optimization and /i-adaptivity for free surface flow problems A. Naji", D. Ouazar", L.C. Wrobel^ ^ Universite Mohammed V, Ecole Mohammadia d'Ingenieurs, LASH, Rabat, Morocco ^ Wessex Institute of Technology, University of Portsmouth, Ashurst Lodge, Southampton 2,4,4, ABSTRACT A BEM formulation of free boundary value problems for a class of steady, irro- tational, plane flow of an inviscid, incompressible fluid was developed using h- adaptive algorithms to determine an optimal discretization, and a Gauss-Newton optimization technique to adjust the free surface location. Numerical results are presented for three different problems: flow past a vertical sluice gate, supercrit- ical flow over an obstacle, and Riabouchinsky cavity flow. INTRODUCTION The difficulties in the modelling of free surface problems are associated to the nonlinearity of the free surface boundary conditions, the unknown location of the free surface which has to be determined as
