Abstract

Invited Paper The hp-version of the boundary element method E.P. Stephan Institute for Applied Mathematics, University of Hannover, W-3000 Hannover, Germany Introduction The hp-version of the boundary element method is a combination of the clas- sical h-version (which achieves accuracy by refining the mesh using piecewise polynomials of fixed degree p) and the p-version (which achieves accuracy by increasing the degree p while keeping the mesh fixed). The hp-version was first analysed theoretically for the finite element method by Babuska [1] and his colleagues using countably weighted Sobolev spaces yielding in case of piecewise analytic given data exponentially fast convergence for the FEM Galerkin solution.Recently, the technique of the hp-version was applied to the boundary element method for boundary value problems on non-smooth, plane domains with piecewise analytic boundary data. Babuska, Guo and Stephan [2] proved the exponential rate of convergence of the boundary element
