Abstract

Invited Paper Review of fundamental solutions for BEM in random waves G.D. Manolis Department of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki 54006, Greece ABSTRACT Problems involving stochastic media are invariably nonlinear with regards to the randomness. As a result, recourse must be made to approximate techniques whose range of validity must be established. Since boundary element method (BEM) formulations for random vibration problems depend on the paticular choice of fundamental solutions (FS), it is imperative to examine the properties of the various approximate FS that can be employed. In this work, three basic BEM formulations based on deterministic FS, perturbed FS and FS obtained from orthogonal polynomial expansions are reviewed and the underlying FS are compared within the context of numerical simulations including the Monte Carlo approach so as to gauge their accuracy.
