Use of an expert system in facilities management

Abstract:
Facilities management may be defined as the application of management techniques in preserving and enhancing the long term value of an existing building.

Because of its heavily human-oriented nature, the application of expert system technology is considered both feasible and desirable. After a careful examination of the problems and nature of facilities management, it was decided to develop a prototype expert system for the allocation of maintenance financing.

Historical maintenance costs would be collated and analyzed to establish a supporting database.

In order to formulate the knowledge base, facilities managers were interviewed for the elicitation and acquisition of knowledge. A prototype expert system was developed using a shell program.
